UK speed limits
Speed limits are one of the most-tested topics on the DVSA car theory test. Knowing the correct limit for each road type is essential -- getting it wrong on the day costs marks.
Key facts to remember
- ◆ Motorways: 70 mph for cars and motorcycles.
- ◆ Dual carriageways: 70 mph national speed limit for cars.
- ◆ Single carriageways: 60 mph national speed limit for cars.
- ◆ Built-up areas: 30 mph unless another limit is signed.
- ◆ Many residential and urban streets are now 20 mph zones.
- ◆ Cars towing a trailer or caravan: 60 mph on motorways and dual carriageways, 50 mph on single carriageways.
Lower limits apply to goods vehicles, buses and vehicles towing trailers. The national speed limit sign (a white circle with a black diagonal stripe) means the default limit for that road type applies. Always obey any posted sign.
