Theory Test

Car Theory Test

How long is the DVSA car theory test?

Quick answer

You have 57 minutes to answer all 50 multiple-choice questions on the DVSA car theory test. After a short optional break you then take the hazard perception test, so the whole appointment lasts around an hour and a half.

The 57-minute limit

The clock starts once the multiple-choice part begins and you have 57 minutes for the 50 questions -- comfortably over a minute per question. You can flag and review answers before you submit, so use any time remaining to go back over uncertain ones.

Then the hazard perception test

After the multiple-choice part there is a break of up to three minutes, then the hazard perception test of video clips. Allow around 90 minutes at the centre in total, plus time for ID checks and the on-screen tutorial.

Practise with the timer on

Time pressure is rarely the problem on the theory test -- misreading questions is. Practising under a real 57-minute timer builds a calm, steady pace and ensures you read each question fully before selecting your answer.
