Theory Test

Car Theory Test

How many questions are on the DVSA car theory test?

Quick answer

The DVSA car theory test multiple-choice part has 50 questions. You get 57 minutes to answer them, and you must answer at least 43 correctly (out of 50) to pass. A separate hazard perception test follows.

How the 50 questions work

Every candidate sits 50 multiple-choice questions drawn at random from a large bank based on the official DVSA learning materials and the Highway Code. The questions span all five study areas: alertness and attitude, safety and your vehicle, rules of the road, road signs and markings, and incidents and first aid.

Question formats

Most questions ask you to pick the single correct answer from four options; a few ask you to select more than one. Read each question carefully -- some are phrased as a scenario, and one question is part of a short case study. There is no negative marking.

How to be ready for any of them

Because the 50 questions are drawn at random, the only reliable preparation is to cover all five study areas. Timed 50-question mocks that mirror the real exam conditions are the fastest way to find your weak areas and fix them before the day.
