Using the motorway
Motorways have their own rules, and the theory test covers how to join, use the lanes and leave safely. Some road users are banned from motorways altogether.
Key facts to remember
- ◆ Join from the slip road, build up speed and merge into a safe gap in the left lane.
- ◆ Keep to the left lane unless overtaking, then move back left when clear.
- ◆ The right-hand lane is for overtaking, not for cruising.
- ◆ Learner drivers may use motorways only with an approved instructor in a dual-control car.
- ◆ Pedestrians, cyclists, mopeds, agricultural vehicles and most learner motorcyclists are not allowed.
On a smart motorway the hard shoulder may be used as a running lane and overhead gantries show variable speed limits you must obey. A red X over a lane means that lane is closed and you must not drive in it.
