Using your lights correctly
Using the right lights at the right time helps you see and be seen. The theory test asks about headlights, fog lights and hazard warning lights and when each is appropriate.
Key facts to remember
- ◆ Use dipped headlights at night in built-up areas and whenever visibility is poor.
- ◆ Dip your headlights for oncoming traffic and when following another vehicle closely.
- ◆ Use full beam on unlit roads but switch to dipped if it could dazzle others.
- ◆ Only use fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced (below 100 metres).
- ◆ Use hazard warning lights when stopped and temporarily obstructing traffic, or to warn of a hazard on a motorway.
Leaving fog lights on when visibility is good can dazzle other drivers and hide your brake lights. Hazard lights should never be used as an excuse to stop or park illegally.
