Tyre tread depth and condition

Tyres are your only contact with the road, so the theory test checks that you know the legal requirements and how to keep them in good condition.

Key facts to remember

  • The legal minimum tread depth for cars is 1.6 mm.
  • That depth must be across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around its whole circumference.
  • Tyres must be free from dangerous cuts, lumps and bulges.
  • Each defective tyre can mean a fine and 3 penalty points.
  • Check tyre pressures when tyres are cold, including before a long or fully loaded journey.

Under-inflated or over-inflated tyres affect braking, steering and fuel economy, and wear unevenly. Uneven wear can point to problems with the brakes, suspension or wheel alignment.
