Theory Test

Lane discipline and separation distances

Good lane discipline keeps traffic flowing and reduces the risk of collisions. The theory test asks which lane to use on different roads and how much space to leave.

Key facts to remember

  • Keep to the left lane unless you are overtaking, then return to the left when it is clear.
  • Do not "hog" the middle or right-hand lane of a dual carriageway or motorway.
  • Choose your lane in good time and follow the arrows and signs at junctions.
  • Leave at least a two-second gap to the vehicle in front in good conditions.
  • On a road with three or more lanes, the right-hand lane is for overtaking, not cruising.

Stay in your lane through bends and junctions and do not change lane at the last moment. Allow extra separation behind motorcyclists and cyclists, who may need to swerve to avoid surface hazards.
