Seat belts and child restraints
Seat belts and child restraints save lives, and the theory test checks that you know the law, including who is responsible for children wearing them.
Key facts to remember
- ◆ You and your passengers must wear a seat belt where one is fitted, unless exempt.
- ◆ Children under 12 years or under 135 cm tall must normally use an appropriate child car seat.
- ◆ The driver is legally responsible for ensuring children under 14 are properly restrained.
- ◆ A rear-facing baby seat must never be used in a front seat protected by an active airbag.
- ◆ Exemptions include some medical reasons and certain delivery drivers travelling short distances.
A correctly fitted restraint must suit the child’s height and weight. Always switch off an active front airbag before fitting a rear-facing baby seat in the front, or fit it in the back instead.
