What to do and report after an accident
The law sets out what you must do after an accident. The theory test checks that you know when to stop, what details to give and when you must report it to the police.
Key facts to remember
- ◆ You must stop if your vehicle is involved in an accident that causes injury or damage.
- ◆ Give your name, address and vehicle details to anyone with reasonable grounds to ask.
- ◆ If anyone is injured, show your insurance certificate or report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
- ◆ If you do not exchange details at the scene, you must report the accident to the police within 24 hours.
- ◆ Make the scene safe, warn other traffic and call the emergency services if anyone is hurt.
Switch off engines and impose a no-smoking rule near a crash, and watch for fuel spillage. Do not move injured people unless they are in immediate danger from fire or further collision.
