Theory Test

Driving in bad weather

Bad weather changes how your car grips and how far you can see. The theory test asks how to adapt your speed, lights and following distance in poor conditions.

Key facts to remember

  • In rain, allow at least double the normal stopping distance.
  • Use dipped headlights in poor daytime visibility so others can see you.
  • Use fog lights only when visibility drops below 100 metres, and switch them off when it improves.
  • In icy conditions, stopping distances can be ten times longer than on a dry road.
  • If you aquaplane, ease off the accelerator and do not brake harshly until grip returns.

In fog, slow down and leave a much larger gap, because you cannot see hazards developing ahead. In snow and ice, drive smoothly in as high a gear as possible and avoid sudden steering or braking.
