Documents you need to drive legally
To drive legally on UK roads you need certain documents to be valid and in place. The theory test checks that you know what is required and when an MOT is needed.
Key facts to remember
- ◆ You must hold a valid driving licence for the category of vehicle you are driving.
- ◆ The vehicle must have at least third-party motor insurance.
- ◆ Most cars need a valid MOT certificate once they are three years old.
- ◆ Vehicle tax (and a valid MOT) must be in place to keep a car on the road.
- ◆ If stopped, you may be asked to produce documents at a police station within seven days.
Driving without insurance is a serious offence carrying penalty points, a fine and possible disqualification. You must tell the DVLA about certain medical conditions that could affect your driving.
