Theory Test

Study topic

Breakdowns and motorway emergencies

Knowing what to do when your car breaks down -- especially on a motorway -- can save lives. The theory test asks about using the hard shoulder and getting help safely.

Key facts to remember

  • On a motorway, move onto the hard shoulder and stop as far left as possible.
  • Leave the vehicle by the left-hand door and wait behind the barrier, away from traffic.
  • Use the orange emergency telephone, which tells the operator your location.
  • Switch on your hazard warning lights, and side lights in poor visibility.
  • On a smart motorway with no hard shoulder, reach an emergency refuge area if you can.

Do not put a warning triangle on a motorway hard shoulder. Keep any passengers, and especially pets, well away from the carriageway while you wait for help.
