Warning sign

Steep hill downwards

This warning triangle tells you the road ahead falls away steeply. A plate showing the gradient as a percentage (for example 1:10 or 10%) tells you how steep the descent is.

When you see it

  • Select a lower gear before the hill to use engine braking on the way down.
  • Avoid riding the brakes continuously, which can make them overheat and fade.
  • Keep your speed under control and leave extra room to stop.
  • Watch for runaway lorries and slow-moving heavy vehicles on the descent.
