Theory Test

Car Theory Test

What happens if you fail the DVSA car theory test?

Quick answer

If you fail, you can take the DVSA car theory test again. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but you must wait at least 3 working days before resitting, rebook on gov.uk, and pay the £23 fee again each time.

You can resit as many times as needed

Failing is not the end -- you can resit as many times as you need. Your results letter shows which of the two parts you failed and which study areas were weakest, so use it to target your revision before rebooking.

Booking a resit

You must wait at least 3 clear working days before resitting. Book a fresh appointment on gov.uk and pay the fee again. Your previous fail does not count against future attempts.

Pass next time

Before resitting, identify where you are losing marks. Realistic 50-question mocks that show your weakest study area and explain every answer turn a near-miss into a confident pass -- without paying for a third attempt.

This is general guidance from an independent study app, not official advice. Always confirm current requirements and fees on gov.uk.
